13th February 2009
Dear Parents,
Just a brief newsletter to remind you of our half-term break next week. We look forward to seeing all the children on Monday 23rd February.
Attendance
As you will know, our daily Wake and Shake has become an important feature of the school day. It is part of the timetabled day and is designed to ensure a brisk start for all. Unfortunately, there are a number of children who regularly miss this activity and who are, on occasion, also deemed late at the time of registration. This is both disruptive to the child, their classmates and to the teachers. I am sure that you will agree with me that this must be avoided if at all possible.
The PTA are extremely supportive of the Wake and Shake and are currently pricing new audio equipment, that they will sponsor, which will enhance the activity even further.
Managing behaviour in school.
Our Ofsted inspection in May 2008 stated 'Behaviour is excellent and pupils say that if any minor bullying occurred, it would be very rapidly sorted out by staff. One parent represented the views of many by writing on a questionnaire, 'The level of pastoral care is exceptional.' and in our recent ICT subject inspection the inspector noted 'Pupils are very motivated by the planned activities and consequently behaviour in lessons is outstanding.'
I am very aware that we would all wish to see St Andrew's building on this strength and ensuring that the behaviour of all underpins the very highest standards of achievement by all.
We currently operate a 'traffic light' system within our Key Stage 2 classes which is used by staff as one helpful tool to manage behaviour. Children who are moved to red during the day are required to 'go to Class 6' where they will complete work under the supervision of a teaching member of staff. Unfortunately, there are a number of pupils who are, all too regularly, 'in Class 6' and I wish to make this system more effective and to alert you as parents more promptly so that we can work in partnership to influence the children.
From 24th February, therefore, the use of this class based system is to be modified.
If children are on 'green' this signifies that they are behaving in a manner which is supportive of their well-being and learning, and that of others.
If they are moved to 'orange' they will have been reminded that they need to modify their behaviour in the interests of themselves and others.
Moving to 'red' will result in their name being recorded in the class book and you, as parent, will receive a first notification of this from the teacher by way of standardised note indicating the reason for this action. At this point I would be pleased if you would discuss this with your child and remind them of the importance of appropriate behaviour.
If this should happen for a second time within a half-term period, the same procedure will occur but I feel that, on receipt of this second notification, you should contact the class teacher and discuss, together, strategies to overcome the inappropriate behaviour.
A third 'red' during the half-term period will result in a letter from me being sent to the parent requesting a meeting to discuss fully the situation.
I am confident that the large majority of our children behave impeccably but I do feel that it is so important to influence and guide the behaviour of all.
I will have spoken to the children about this system prior to arrival home of this newsletter.
I thank you for your continued support.
