Oak Class Newsletter - Summer Term 2010

Welcome back! We hope you had a super break and enjoyed the lovely weather. Let's hope it continues so that we are able to make use of the pool after half-term.

Once again, we have a busy term ahead. In Literacy we will be looking firstly at adventure and mystery stories and playscripts, then at writing instructions, letter writing and poetry. We will also be doing lots of phonic, spelling and handwriting practise. Of course, we will be incorporating writing in lots of cross-curricular work including science and R.E. In Numeracy we will continue to build on the calculation methods introduced last term and we will be learning some more formal calculation methods. We will be learning to recognise fractions which are several parts of a whole and also equivalent fractions and we will be doing more work on shape, space and measures as well as data-handling. We will focus very much on learning mathematical skills through problem-solving so that the children develop the skills to solve everyday maths problems confidently and methodically. Don't forget to help them with their times tables and their number bonds to 10, 20 and 100 - it really helps them in so many other areas of maths.

Other areas of learning will include:

Science: Light and dark
P.E./games: Invasion games; striking and fielding games; athletics; swimming (hopefully) after half term
R.E: What does it mean to belong to a religion?
Art/DT: Moving Monsters - using pneumatics to make moving models
French: classroom words and phrases, building simple sentences, counting and number work, spelling common French words, songs and action rhymes.
ICT: Sending emails
Music: "Painting sounds" - listening to, responding to and composing music to create moods
PSHE: Relationships; Changes

P.E
P.E will continue to be on Mondays and Fridays. The children will need trainers or daps for these sessions. Please ensure that your child has the correct P.E. kit, (in a labelled PE bag) in school on the appropriate days.

Homework
Homework is set every Wednesday and should be handed in on the following Wednesday. Spellings are given out weekly (on Tuesdays until half-term) and we ask that the children practice them in their spelling books at homes at least 5 times each week (they will earn lots of stickers if they do). Please help the children to find a few extra words to add to their lists which follow the spelling patterns for that week. We do not test the children on their weekly spellings but we do expect them to practise at home regularly and to bring their spelling books to school every day in their book bags. Of course, regular reading aloud to an adult at home is also very important!

Please feel free to pop in should you have any questions or concerns. Have a super summer term.

Best wishes,

Nicola Berry & Jackie Pitcher
