We then added bunting and finally created clay figures which were fired and then painted in colours in keeping with the painting. These were added to the painting one by one. Pavanes, Portraits and Farthingales workshop at Montacute HousePavanes, Portraits and Farthingales teachers' workshop at Montacute House
I had a fantastic day at Montacute House learning about Tudor dancing, investigating portraits amd making farthingales to plump up one's Tudor skirts. We practised our dancing in theGreat Hall in the main house.
We also looked at Tudor portraiture, learning about the materials they used and investigating the settings of the portrait. Portraits of The current Tudor monarch were copied or pounced using pin pricks to trace the outline of the head and you were nobody if you didn't have a portrait of your Queen on your wall.
In the afternoon we made farthingales, a cane structue used, with a bum bag, to support the heavy weight of the Tudor skirts. Watch our video to find out more. At the end of the day, wearing our farthingales, we performed the Pavane in the Long Gallery, much to the paying visitors amusement.
A super day, thanks to the Clare and Carole from the National Portrait Gallery and Montacute House.

"THE FIELD" of St Andrew'sOur "Field" comprises approximately 200
terracotta figures made by every child in Key Stage 2, Years 3 - 6, 7 - 11 year olds. The work is based on "The Field of the Bristish Isles" created by the English sculptor Anthony Gormley who won the Turner prize with his 40,000 figures in 1994.
We will be exhibiting them at the RAISE Exhibition in Sherborne House the week beginning March 5th for a week.
The whole "sculpture" is called the field because from a distance the differing heights of the figures look like the metachronal rhythm of grass moving in a field.
