DESIGNING AND MAKING MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS WITH CLASS 5

It was always going to be interesting..

..wrestling with clay, but once we got the hang of it..

..fantastic instruments ..

..could be made.

Ollie is a drum fanatic and made a tjembe drum..

..whereas Ellie decided to make some bells.

Henry very puts the finishing details on his drum and..

..Ethan made an instrument which will take strings after it is fired.

James made an ocarina which should make noise when it is blown.

All the class had their photo taken for the local paper with their damp instruments. The instruments go from a dull grey..

which don't make any noise, to pale yellow and very hard and which make lovely sounds.

This was the choice of glaze colours.

Callums instrument was half drum and half shaker..

..whereas Harry's had strings to pluck.

Rose's shaker had shards of clay inside it.

Sebastian tried and tried to make sounds..

..as did Elaa - easier said than done.

Oliie plucked the skin on his drum and blew through it make a second sound.

We used sliced up ballons to make the top of our drums..

..and elastic bands for the strings.

Plucking the ballon made a very interesting sound..

..and shaking the shaker was great once we got rid of the ash inside.

James found his ocarina made a better sound than blowing it.

Makng your own drumsticks also helped with changing the tone..

..as did different sized elastic bands.

Here is another tricky ocarina which Rose could play because she is a flute playing.

Arthurs ballon kept on pinging off.

It si not a coincidence that the bells are ..

..the last of the instruments to be photographed.

They required lots of fiddly glazing and then..

..stringing up so the bells could ring out.

Not surprisingly the larger the bell,..

..the deeper the sound and the smaller the bell,..

..the higher the sound.

Don't you think they all look great..

..they make great wind chimes too.
