OFF TO LEESON HOUSE WE GO!!

Year 4 and 5 have gone to Leeson this week. The weather is a little grey, but not wet at the moment! Visit our blog at www.classash.primaryblogger.co.uk to leave some comments for the children. We will be adding our blogs on Wednesday and Thursday so do try to have a look and leave some comments! See you on Friday!

Working together in ASH

We work in working partners some of the time. This helps us with our learning as we share our ideas and work together to make improvements. Ash children are super star working partners. We know that our learning is strengthened by listening to each other and giving suggestions for improvements.

3D shape work in Ash

We have been looking at 3D shapes and making them from 2D drawings. We then made some symmetrical 3D shapes.

Blogging in Ash

This week (Sept 26-30) Our blog, www.classash.primaryblogger.co.uk will be the focus blog. This means that our quadblogging buddy schools will be leaving us lots of comments. If you haven't had a chance yet, please have a look on our blog and leave some comments. Your email address will not be visible- the comment box requires an email address to reduce spam. (unwanted emails from companies- the email equivalent of junk mail!) It would be great to have some comments from parents and family members as well as the children. Thank you for your support.

Tudor Day on Wednesday

Don't forget that the whole of Key Stage 2 (Ash, Chestnut and Willow) are having a special visitor on Wednesday. We will all be coming in as Tudors for the day. Looking forward to a fun day .

OUR CLASS BLOG

Please have a look at our blog.
Over the summer it would be fabulous for Class Ash children to add to the blog- either through the contact form at the bottom of the page, by leaving comments on each other's posts or by emailing to ash@yetminster.dorset.sch.uk
It would be great for some of the children coming new into Ash class to contribute to the blog. Children moving into Willow are most welcome to continue adding to the blog as well.
The blog differs from the website in so much as comments can be left on posts which gives children a real sense of purpose for their writing, as well as a worldwide audience! Cool!
I hope to see as many of the children contributing as possible. Anything can be written about; not just to do with school. Have a read through some of the posts and comments to get a flavour of how it works.
I can't wait to read your blogs. :)

Ash Class Summer Showing Assembly

We have been sharing our learning. ENJOY

Ash Class Arts focus

We had a great term exploring lots of artists: we made Klee fish using wax and paint, Russian Faberge eggs, Mexican Trees of Life and a monster Gustav Klimt using magazine.

Ash Class are experiencing the Pied Piper of Hamlin

We have been recreating the poem of the pied piper of Hamlin. We also created collaged characters in the poem.

Ash Class had a fab World Book Day

Click on us to see what we looked like.

Anansi stories in Class Ash

We have been reading many stories about the mischievous Anansi. These stories originated in West Africa and became popular in Carribean culture too. We used the story, "Spider's wife" to write our own plays. We made some maasks for the characters and performed them in class. We wrote reviews of the plays too. It was great fun. Click on the picture to see our masks.
Click on the videos below to watch our stories

Ash Class explore shape sorting using Venn diagrams

We used hoops to sort shapes. We had to decide how they were going to be sorted: regular, irregular, number of sides... Click the pictures to see more. Can you work out how we sorted the shapes?

Caribbean Day in Class Ash

We are learning about the island of St Lucia in class. To really help us to get into our topic, we enjoyed a Caribbean day in school. Everyone dressed in bright colours and we made a range of delicious Caribbean foods, learnt about fair trade, sang songs and drew some fabulous pictures. Click on the fruit to see more.

Showing Assembly in Ash Class

Our assembly was full of exciting things which were videoed separately and included the powerpoints about our church which are in the section below. Enjoy our assembly, our Autumn leaves and our song, Stand By Me

Our Church by Year 4

When our Year 5 classmates were in Leeson, we had a fab week doing all sorts of exciting things. This included vising our church, following the church trail and then making powerpoints about our experiences. Enjoy

Leeson House Cup

Each year we take our Year 5 children to Leeson. All of the children were a credit to themselves, our school and their parents. We always present the Leeson cup to a child who has impressed the staff at Leeson and from school with their attitude. It is always a very hard choice as all the children were brilliant. This year the cup was awarded to Loveday by last year's cup holder, Ellen. Everyone was very proud of her.

Leeson House Residential for Year 5 in Ash Class

The year 5 children had a great week at Leeson, the weather was varied but it didn't stop the children from finding out lots about the town of Swanage and the villages around Langton Matravers. Look at some of our pictures...

Exploring our church

Whilst the year five's in Ash Class are at Leeson House we have been exploring our church as part of learning about how we fit into our local community. Yeaterday we talked about where we live and how we get to school and today we walked to our church and enjoyed doing the Church Trail, copies of which you can see below. It is amazing how many times a year we go to church but don't actually look around and about the church. Click on us to see all our photos of the inside of the church.

Ash Class have been making moving toys

Our Design and Technology project this term has been making toys which use cams to change the movement from rotary to linear. Check our toys which were jolly hard work but worth it in the end.

Ash Class' World Cup project

We have been uploading our timelines onto the elanguages web page. Follow the link, scroll to task 2 and look for the folder called Class Ash timelines- the timelines are in there.
We have also been learning lots about the countries and are making presentations about them. Watch this space...

We've been investigating ice balloons in Ash Class

As part of our science, we planned and carried out an investigation to see if we could stop an ice balloon from melting. The children worked in groups and made regular measurements of the balloons. We were amazed that two of the groups managed to insulate their balloons so well that they were still there the following morning!
We also drew them and saw what happened when we added salt.

Swimming Starts

Ash Class will be swimming on Mondays and Fridays. Please be sure to bring towel, swim cap, goggles if needed and , most importantly, a costume. Girls one piece costume please, boys swim shorts/trunks. Baggy Bermudas are probably not the best type to wear. Our pool was 24 degrees today. Yippee.

Class Ash's Showing Assembly May 2010

We are the first this summer term to do our showing assembly. Click on the video to find out more and on the planet photo to see the slideshow of our creativity.

World Cup 2010 in Ash Class

This term we are studying some of the countries which are taking part in the world cup. We have also joined the elanguages international project. If you follow the link below you will see some of the logos the children have drawn. At the moment we are busy putting together presentations about our countries. These will also be shared with the other schools who are taking part. When the games start we will be following the progress of the country we are studying (and England too, of course!) We will be drawing lots of charts to show results.

Press printing in Ash Class

We have been learning to press print using 3 different colour layers and basing our designs on the Victorian artist William Morris. Have a look at our designs.

Ash Class Swimming at Sherborne

This term class Ash will be swimming at the boy's school on Tuesdays. First session next week- 12 Jan. Please bring kits

Victorian day in Ash Class.

We spent a great day as Victorian children. We all agreed that life nowadays is much better in loads of ways!

Ash Class's mixed media collages

On our return from Leeson House we created these stunning pieces of artwork from carpet tiles and wool, fabric and other bits and bobs. I think you'll agree that the end results are very effective - AND we were using recycled materials.

Ash class had a fantastic week at Leeson

We had such a wonderful time exploring and looking at all the amazing things around and about Leeson. Have a look at some of the pictures. If you go to the special events page you can read what the children thought of their time at Leeson House.

Science Museum Visit by Ash Class

Class Ash were given the opportunity to visit the Science Museum in London. The trip was funded by the Dorset Asset trust. We had a fantastic day and enjoyed the exhibits. Look at the children's comments on the special events page to read what they thought.

We've Been making Moving Toys using Cams

We've been investigating toys that use cams to help them move. Click on Harvey to see our toys and on the links below to see them move.
Frazier's moving toy Harvey's toy Teddy's toy Sophie's toy Scott's toy
Sam's toy Rebecca's toy Owen's toy Mattie's toy Kim's toy
Jack's toy Henry's toy George's toy Elliott M's toy Elliott S's toy

WE ARE FILM MAKERS

We have been learning to be film makers. We started our project by investigating Audacity, sound editing software. Using this we wrote and produced a 30 second advert with sound effects and different voices. Listen to our adverts.
We the moved onto Photostory and made a short film using only one photo of us at Leeson. Lucy & Elliott
Freddie & Ollie
Following on from that we made instructional films using photos from when we made bread in DT. We added text, transitions and sound effects. Watch our films.

Our next investigation involves using Movie Maker - we added music and edited a short film called the Amazing Squirrel. These are great fun - ENJOY.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

We have spent the term learning about sound in science and investigation Musical instruments in Design Technology. We then designed our own using recycled packaging which we covered in browm gummed tape. They were then painted white and then decorated carefully. We were justly proud of our instruments especially as they fulfilled the criteria of making at least two sounds - click on the link below to look at them.
OUR FINSHED MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

OUR BREAD MAKING DAY

We had a super day planning and making our bread. We created our own groups and each group designed a different savoury bread. Our bread companies were:
  • Katy, Samuel, Aimee, Frazier, Mattie and Scott in the "Cheesey Buffos"
  • The Bread Makers of the Day James, George, Kurt and Sam (who was unwell - not from his bread I hasten to add) in the "Chilli Bread Company".
  • Elliott M, Kim, Rebecca, Alice and Lucy in the "Breadbusters"
  • Angus, Owen, Ollie, Elliott, Sophie and Georgina in "Bob's Bread Bakery"
  • Teddy, Jack, Harvey and Callum in "Bread Wars" and
  • Andrew, Carl, Isabel, Freddie and Kitty in the "Breadinators".

AFRICAN ARTS WEEKS

We have been having great fun this week making lots of exciting things.
We have also been writing some fantastic poems on Africa; listen to these.
James and Sebastian's poem
Imogen and Rose's poem

ROMAN DAY

All of the Junior classes came as Romans. We made scrummy honey cakes and honey toast, mosaics, sang latin songs, learnt how to use Roman numerals, performed plays... Too much to write here. Check out the photos to get a flavour of our day.

Celtic Britain

During the Spring Term we are learning about the effects of the Roman Invasion. The children spent time soaking up the atmosphere of our rounhouse before planning, sketching and painting their interpretations of pre-Roman Britain. I'm sure you'll agree they made an excellent effort. Well done everyone.

BAKING BICCIES IN DESIGN TECHNOLOGY.

We had the delicious task this term of investigating (which involved a good deal of tasting), designing and then baking our own designer cookies. I have to say there was a common theme running through them. Can you get what it is?

TEAMWORK

One of the most important things we learnt during our residential at Leeson was working together as a team. "Together we stand-divided we fall!"

HATCHING CHICKS

We have had an incubator in our classroom for the last three and a half weeks. We had thirty five eggs and were hoping for about 80% of them to hatch (that's the average success rate). Much excitement ensued as the chicks began emerging at twenty days. By the third day the class were overjoyed with thirty fluffy chicks. 86% success! Yes!

SCIENCE WEEK JUNE 18-22 2007

We spent a week investigating the theme of flight as well as having visits from the planetarium, some secondary school teachers and some student teachers. We went to At Bristol. Look at the pictures. You can find out more about the Science week on the whole school Special events and the Activities gallery.

Some of our work in Literacy

The children learn the features of a wide variety of genres as part of the daily literacy lessons. We recently looked at non-chronological report writing. The children chose from the themes of wolves, cats, foxes or bears. The internet and library were used for research. After the information had been gathered the class organised their notes into headings before putting together detailed reports for the animals of their choice.

ENVIRONMENTAL ARTWORK

Whilst at Leeson House the children collected various natural objects which were then used creatively in school.

CLASS 5 MAKING MUSIC

We have been investigating musical instruments and then designing and making our own. Have a look

Learning about Islam

We had a visit from Tariq who works for the Bournemouth Islamic centre. He showed us some beautiful prayer mats and talked to us about "What is important to Muslims?". We had been studying Islam as part of our RE.
