A TASTY EcoDay was had by allWE started the day with a school tidy up and litter pick. We closed the school gates and got stuck in. The flavour of this Eco Day was clearly breadmaking and our harvest bounty. Ash Class made bread for the whole school which was cooked outside and was delicious served with butter. Several classes made chutney using our vegetable plot produce and Chestnut class also made the most delicious apple crumple which we all enjoyed. Nature sculpture was also on the agenda as was drawing of seed heads and flowers using chalks and charcoal. | ![]()
Eco Day 10th Oct Read on...Eco day - 10th/ 11th October ( depending on weather!)SOS! To continue to develop the 'Growing Area' we urgently need a team of strong volunteers who would be happy to help from time to time for a few hours at a weekend - refreshments will be provided! We have lots to do including a shed to put up, a gate to hang, a hose to connect and erect the frame for the eco greenhouse. Please let me know if you are interested. Thanks. Please make sure your child comes to school in old clothes, preferably wearing earthy greens/ browns. We will be planting bulbs by the swimming pool fence, so a trowel and gardening gloves would also be useful. Other activities involve tidying our raised beds, making class plaques for each of the beds, deciding on plants we wish to grow to make hanging baskets to sell at the summer fair next year, collecting up the leaves, cooking bread on the open fire near the hut, autumn walks, autumn collages… We would also welcome any unwanted seeds, particularly those suitable for summer hanging baskets! Many thanks. Best wishes, Alex Locke Eco schools Co-ordinator. | ![]()

What a fantastic 4th EcoDayWe had a brilliant day doing eco matters; we had a race to pick up as much litter as we could so that our school would look better and be safer for animals. We also planted bulbs in the car park area to make it beautiful in the spring and we planted bulbs and plants in a new flower bed at the entrance which was very kindly constructed by Gavin Locke, our super duper caretaker. He also made us the beginnings of a "fruit Shoot" hedgehog and will also be building us a a raised garden by our pre-school in which we will grow veggies. Wow. We also had a visit from the Young People's Trust for the Environment with extremely interesting talks about eco matters for each class including our pre-school. Our thanks to them and to CG Pitcher and Son for donating all the wood for our flowerbeds and a monster board on which to mount our eco code. Also to Alex and Gavin Locke for all the time and energy they put into us being very nearly a Silver EcoSchool. Finally we switched all our power for an hour to do our bit in saving our planet!Click on the boys to see our eco slideshow, or watch the powerpoint show below. | ![]()
Dress in green for our 4th Eco Day 22nd Sept 2010We are looking forward our 4th Eco Day with lots of things planned. A big thank-you to all those children and parents who have brought in 2 litre drinks bottles for our eco greenhouse. We need many more - keep bringing them into school!Next Wednesday, 22nd September, we will be holding our 4th Eco Day. Again the emphasis will be on developing the School grounds and encouraging wildlife. Following an Assembly from the Young People's Trust for the Environment, we will be undertaking a whole school litter pick with certificates given to the team who collect the most! The children will all help to plant bulbs to brighten up the car park roundabout, and plan our 'Growing Area' to be situated on the grassy area near Pre-School. In addition each child and staff member will write a line for a whole school poem about the environment which will later be sorted into themes and displayed. We would encourage parents to contribute as well - please bring your line of poetry to Mrs McVeigh in the office. Mr Locke will also construct another flower bed by the entrance and each class will undertake an environmental activity lead by staff from the Young People's Environmental Trust for the Environment. In addition, there will be an hour in the afternoon without any electricity and an Assembly at the end of the day to find out which team collected the most litter! Please make sure your child comes to school dressed in old clothes (green if possible), with a pair of wellies to change into and a coat. On completion of a formal environmental review, we will have met all the criteria to become a silver eco school. We will then continue to work towards gaining the prestigious Green Flag award. Thank-you for your support. | ![]()
Our third Eco Day, Wednesday 31st March 2010We will be having our third Eco Day on 31st March which again will focus on improving the School Grounds. The day will begin with an Assembly, stressing the importance of the 3 Rs - reduce, reuse and recycle. The day will conclude with a presentation by 3 children from the Eco Action team who recently attended a most enjoyable and interesting 'Eco Summit' with me. This will then be put on the website for all to see.Other activities to be undertaken include:- • mending the hut to enable this to be used as an outside classroom • tidying the Conservation Area and seeing whether the bulbs that we planted in October have started to grow. • finalising ideas for improving the Conservation Area to enable costings and grant applications to be undertaken • The construction of another raised bed by the entrance. • Making a 3D clay Eco Code based on ideas already submitted by the children. • Other classroom activities organised by the Class teachers Please could you save and rinse out any Robinson Fruit Shoot bottles you have at home and hand these into the Office for an eco art activity. Please send the children to school in old clothes (preferably green!) with a pair of wellies and a waterproof coat, If you are available to help I'm sure the teachers would be most grateful for an extra pair of hands! I have ordered a fine sunny day so all activities can be enjoyed to their maximum! Thank-you for your support.

Eco Council Matters 2/10/09Please ask Eco - Council reps to share this with the classPresent;- Ellie and Rhys - Holly Class Ellie and Jessame - Oak Class Uther, Joe and Emily - Chestnut Class Lucy and Andrew - Ash Class Sophie and Oliver - Willow Class. Matters discussed:- 1. Eco- day We all felt that this had been enjoyable and a good start to the Eco school initiative. The children particularly enjoyed being outside in the Conservation area and building the homes for bugs. We now have short listed the eco - codes from each class. Mrs Locke will talk with Mrs Neate Clegg to decide how to make the code. 2. Eco- School bronze award. We talked about what was required for this award. Before the Eco day we met to carry out an Environmental review. From this we felt three areas were outstanding - energy, transport and improving our school grounds. 3 areas would be too much to tackle all at once so we are going to focus on reducing energy and improving our school grounds ( bio - diversity) An action plan will be drawn up to target these areas. We then need to prove that we are tackling these areas to gain the bronze award. 3. Improving the school grounds. We all had lots of good ideas. We intend to eventually have vegetable patches for each class, plant trees and make to make a tree nursery, have a seated area in the conservation area, a raised bed by the entrance to improve its appearance and a pond in another part of the grounds. Mrs Locke mentioned the need to get adults involved to help with the clearing and manual work. Sophie suggested having an eco- suggestion box similar to the School Council's. 4. Class monitors. Each class will have a responsibility aimed at the 2 areas mentioned above. Acorn - tba Holly - litter Oak - bird feeders in conservation area | ![]()
Eco Day June 2009We had a fantastic day learning how to be an Eco School. ECO DAY Tues 23rd June 2009We had a super Eco Day learning to be Eco friendly. We all came to school wearing green and we had an Eco assembly given by Inogen Davenport from the Dorset Wildlife Trust about protecting the habitats of frogs which linked to developing habitats in our own conservation area. We all had a chance to help clear the Conservation Area during the day and we drew up some ideas as to how wanted it to look. We also started our brains working to come up with an Eco Code. During the day we participated in Art activities using recycled materials and other eco activities. We also switched off our electricity for an hour to help save our planet which we hope to become a regular activity. What a great day we had.
