Rave reviews fro King Hal himselfThis is what his Majesty had to say about us
YETMINSTER! Home to Yeti's. It is! Honest. Well, the Yetties actually, who if you're not entirely sure who they are, they're actually a sort of Happy Shopper version of The Wurzels, which is no great recommendation if you're a music lover. Well I was back at St Andrew's Junior School in this delightful little town/big village just over the border from Somerset into Dorset. I was last here back in September 2008 (see this blog for my rave review of the place!) and it was good to be back and welcomed by such lovely kind and friendly teachers. It was a biggish group - years 3, 4 and 5 combined for a total of about 90 kids, and they were fantastic! All but one of them had dressed up in brilliant Tudor costumes, some of which you could tell had been lovingly made by a member of their family. Great stuff. We had a fine morning, but stiflingly hot! This is supposed to be September for heaven's sake! I suppose it is God's way of letting us know that the cricket season is over. I was very grateful for a fan being supplied for me for the day which I constantly had running trying to stop me spontaneously combusting. I had a school dinner, and whilst waiting for this one of the dinner ladies came up and said "'Ere, is that padding or all you?" pointing at my stomach. Without waiting for an answer she poked me
The afternoon was great fun - but even hotter, and we then had the wee ones from year 2 come and join us for the final joust. It was another rollicking affair with some very closely fought contests, but finished with a win for... the Gentlemen again! This year it seems they're inseparable. Current score is:
GENTLEMEN 3 - 3 LADIES

Swimming Pool NewsLast year the school's swimming pool was only used a handful of times. With this in mind, a Swimming Pool Committee has been formed to try and rejuvenate the pool to a standard where it can be made the most of. We've had a local swimming pool company come and have a look at it and give us a quote for the works required. The quote covers, amongst other things, a fresh lick of paint, some new pipe work and changing it over to a salt chlorinator (the salt chlorinator produces chlorine gas from the chloride in the water, which in turn sanitises the water. It is kinder to the bather's skin and less harmful to the environment. We will still need to test and record the water and the pH will still need to be adjusted in the usual way, but the daily maintenance is made simpler and easier to complete.) Most importantly it includes heating the pool. This, in theory, would enable the pool to be used from May half term to October half term each year! We would also aim to open the pool to families during the summer holidays. All of this, however, comes at a price - £10000. It is a lot of money, but it is a long term investment. We hope to get local businesses involved for the initial outlay, but it is also going to need a lot of parent power! Please come along to a coffee morning - Friday 6th May, 8.45am where we will discuss in detail what we'd like to do and where you can express any concerns or give us some helpful ideas. Hope to see you there.

St Andrew's youngsters past and present perform Romeo and JulietThe Junior Wriggle Valley Players put on a fantastic and ambitious rendition of Romeo and Juliet, a musical romance, set in London in 2010, where two families, the Capulets and the Montagues are at war. There is racial tension because the Capulet family is of Hindu origin and the Montagues are of Western descent. The Mayoress of London tries to calm the situation. The rest, as they say, is history. Popeye and the Pixies played splendidly chosen musical numbers throughout the play.
The majority of the cast are either present St Andrew's children from Year 3 to 6 or past youngsters who are now at the Gryphon up to Year 10. The Shakesperian masterpiece was rewriiten for the Juniors by Matt and Annabel's mum, Sylvie Lord who also directed it and it was produced by the Juniors' Director and Ben and Josh's mum Caroline Hart. Well done to one and all.

FANTASTIC NEW AGILITY TRAILThe immediate excitement of 2009 is the construction of our long awaited Agility Trail. All the funds raised by the PTA in the various activities they stoically organise, fairs, quizzes etc, over the last few years have been put into this project. This, together with a very generous donation from Westland in Yeovil, has been matched by school funds.
All along the journey, the children via the School Council, have been consulted as to the specific elements they would actually like to see in their Agility Trail. Their ideas were transferred into a plan from which, using Peter Hunt from the Toy Barn in Sherborne, as our consultant, we were able to commission exactly what we wanted. The supplier Home Front from Salisbury then constructed the play trail in mid-January. The Trail will include an imaginative play element - "the ship" designed with KS1 children in mind with bridges, cargo nets, slides, climbing wall and sails to give shade on those hot summers' days (do you remember those from your youth?). What will be lovely about this is that this area can also be used as an outdoor classroom in the warmer months.
In addition, the rest of the trail, which will keep the older children entertained for hours, will comprise: climbing and monkey bars, wobble and spring beams, traverse and rock walls, rope walk, climbing trees and stepping stones. What is also fantastic is that the whole trail is constructed onto all weather safety matting which means that the children will be able to access the trail from the playground without traipsing through the muddy field. Just another item to add to our list of ensuring we are a Healthy School.
